Right on

Dare's got a post up about that shitty acronym where he puts the argument against it in terms much more eloquent than I did.

He's right in that the usage of technologies that suppossedly comprise "AJAX" has much more to do with the abilities and design preferences of the engineers who built the given examples.

I fear though that the battle against a useless marketing acronym has been lost in this case as it does allow non-techies to discuss the architecture in a succinct fashion.

So in response I propose a new term. I'm officially coining the term UMA - Useless Marketing Acronym. (pronounced oo-ma, or U-M-A)

Here are some example use cases to get you started:

- "Hey Ed, I see that's a really cool way of doing things! Let's hurry and come up with an UMA for it so we can call ourselves experts for having coined the UMA for it"

- "That would be great, once we have an UMA, then we can write books on how to become an expert in our UMA."

- "Man I wish we came up with an UMA for that because then we'd be able to market ourselves as experts"

So there you have it, now we can talk about the creation of names like AJAX. Perhaps I'll start a UMA consulting firm where we help you come up with new names for technologies so that you can make your business more successful through marketing : )

Click through to read Dare's post, it's much more informative than mine.
