KML/GeoRSS on the iPhone

Originally uploaded by thincvox
So I figured out a while ago that clicking on Google Map links happily launches the Google Maps app on the iPhone. Today I was wondering if it would support map links that used GeoRSS and KML, and it does! Give it try, put http://tinyurl.com/33mgth into the Search box of the Maps app and you’ll see the markers come down. This works for both KML and GeoRSS and both correctly will launch from Google Maps links in Safari.

Hi, I can access a kml feed on my iphone, but can you do anything with the locations once you see them? I’m particularly interested in being able to get driving directions to a particular one, but when I press the arrow to “go into” the location, press “Directions to here”, nothing shows up in the End field. I’ve tried this a hundred different ways, but I just don’t think it’s built in.
thanks

It looks iPhone only displays the title field of the point. When I go to the next level of the point, it does not show the “link” or “description” defined in the GeoRSS. Does anyone know how to get this information shown ?
Thanks.

Looks like this stopped working with firmware 2.0. A shame because it was working really nicely with our site http://www.docoloco.com/iphone.

Seems to work just fine still…
Here is an example:

Looks like they only stopped supporting kml urls when provided via href=”http://maps.google.com/maps?q=…”
If you use href=”maps:…” you’re be fine – at least for now
Docoloco is back on track now.

Is there a limit to the number of points you can display on the map ?

It’s hard to say because I can’t see the full URL you are directing us to VIA tinyurl. I also doubt your anxiously awaiting this reply 9 months later. For anyone else who stumbles upon this, the kml file can be called by:
“maps:q=http://my-kml-example.com/234234.kml”
or dynamically
“maps:q=http://something.com/make-kml.php?map=234234″
If you are generating it dynamically, don’t forget the XML header.
